Glossary
-
Spot-free water is highly purified water with almost all total dissolved solids (TDS) and minerals like calcium and magnesium removed. Because it contains little to no mineral residue, it evaporates completely from surfaces like car paint and glass without leaving white chalky spots or streaks.
-
A clay bar is a synthetic, rubberized putty tool used in auto detailing to pull embeddedbrake dirt, dust, tree sap, and industrial fallout out of a car's paint. Washing only cleans top-level grime, but a clay bar leaves the surface smooth and clean.
-
An iron decontamination spray or “Liquid Claybar” is a chemical cleaning liquid used in auto detailing to dissolve microscopic, embedded metal particles—such as brake dust, rail dust, and industrial fallout—from a vehicle's paint, wheels, and glass. When sprayed, it reacts with the iron and turns a vivid purple or red as it safely flushes the debris away.

Item descriAn SiO2 spray (silicon dioxide or silica spray) is an easy-to-use liquid car care product that adds a temporary ceramic protective layer to vehicle paint. It uses tiny silica particles that bond to the car's clear coat to make surfaces shiny and water-repellent.
Lasts anywhere from a few weeks to several months, which is shorter than a professional multi-year ceramic coating, but much easier to apply.

-
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer, typically containing silicon dioxide (SiO₂), that chemically bonds with a vehicle's factory paint, forming a semi-permanent layer of protection. This layer is hydrophobic, resistant to contaminants, and enhances the surface gloss.
-Kovalent Coating
Lasts for years rather than the few weeks or months provided by traditional wax or sealants.
-
Spray wax is a liquid protective coating applied via a spray bottle to clean exterior surfaces—most commonly automotive paint—and buffed off with a microfiber towel. It provides a fast, easy way to add gloss, UV protection, and water-repelling hydrophobic layers without the heavy labor of traditional paste wax.
Usually has a life span of two weeks to a month.
-
Car wax is a protective and cosmetic coating applied to a vehicle's paintwork, commonly made from natural ingredients like carnauba or synthetic polymers. It fills microscopic flaws in the clear coat, repels water, and shields paint from UV rays and dirt.
-Chemical Guys
Wax contains no abrasives. Can last up to 6 months.
-
a deep-cleaning method for carpets and fabric upholstery that combines a specialized foaming detergent with a wet-vacuum machine to lift and remove embedded dirt, grease, and stains from deep within the fibers.
-
A light grade abrasive product using abrasives on the low end of the scale (6 mohs). On very soft surfaces such as paint, they have abrasive qualities and will remove very small surface defects such as oxidation and swirls.
Polishes will many times include waxes, silicones, resins, or other protective ingredients found in finish products to create a finished look and durability.
-
A compound is an abrasive product used to remove scratches and paint defects by abrading away the upper levels of the overall paint surface. Compounds usually have a fairly high percentage of abrasives with hardness on the upper end of the scale (8 Mohs). Compounds can be used to eradicate sanding scratches, shallow chips, environmental scratches, oxidation and water spots.
-
chemical symbol expressing the degree of acidity or alkalinity of a solution
-
A chemical substance whose properties include the ability to react with bases or alkalis in water solutions to form salts. Always has a Ph of less than 7
-
A chemical substance such as sodium or potassium which reacts with and neutralizes an acid. Has a Ph higher than 7.
-
Cleaner with a ph of 6 to 8
-
A clear protective finish applied to new cars at time of production. Applied to paint and most wheels.
-
A car paint base coat is the primary colored layer applied directly over the vehicle's primer. It provides the visual color, hue, and special effects like metallic flakes, but it contains no hardeners or gloss. It requires a clear coat on top for shine and protection.
-Lime Line
-
a special paint-like undercoat applied to bare metal, plastic, or body filler before the main color coat. It acts as a bonding agent so the topcoat sticks well, blocks moisture to stop rust, and fills tiny scratches for a smooth finish.
